The Forest Pedagogy Conference lead by the SDW is a nationwide conference on the professionalisation of forest pedagogues that has been held regularly since 2006. In 2023, we carried out a Congress which combined the established SDW Forest Pedagogy Conference and the 17th European Forest Pedagogics Congress (the annual congress of the FCN-Subgroup) in one event. The motto of our congress was "Learning to create together – How can Forest Education for Sustainable Development build partnerships and empower people?"
The congress focused on participation, empowerment and the strengthening of partnerships for the transformation of society towards more sustainability. It provided an opportunity to pool and expand the expertise of the two groups of actors. At the same time, we wanted to boost the existing forest education network. By looking beyond our own horizons, by increasingly looking at neighbouring countries and worldwide, we were able to gain new supporters for forest-based Education for Sustainable Development.
The mayor goals of the congress, namely bringing people together and providing new perspectives and impulses concerning forest-bases ESD through practical and a theoretical approaches, was achieved. People from 26 countries came to join the congress, to share experiences and knowledge – and to network.
The event took place at the JUFA Hotel in Königswinter near Bonn from the 20th to 22nd September 2023. The participants were also invited to a get-together in Königswinter on the 19th September 2023.
The congress was devided into theoretical and practical sessions: Several experts gave theoretical input on forest pedagogics. Additionally, various workshops, activities and excursions provided practical insights.
